Two weeks ago the Australian Men’s 1000m Kayak Squad along with it’s entourage touched down in Munich.
We were met with blue skies and temperatures in the mid twenties but this was to only be a teaser for what was to come. Minimums of zero and tops of eight degrees!
The boys were put to work the day after arriving under the watchful eye of Men’s Head Coach Jimmy Owens along with Assistant Coach Nathan Luce, who together last year coached the boys to a Silver medal in the K4 1000m at the World Championships.
The difference this year for me to be here, is due to the fact that my athlete, Murray Stewart will also be competing in the K1 1000m.
Upon arriving in Munich and setting up camp, the boys have gotten straight into their training and European lifestyle. Train, eat, sleep.
All the boys have stepped it up this year, knowing how close they were last year at World’s with a silver. If the training doesn’t toughen them up the clod weather certainly will.
You can see that the boys are already in a great frame of mind. Battle ready, from close races of past years and their hunger to be better.
We have been training on the course where the 1972 Munich Olympics were held. The water is so clear I keep waiting to see coral and some tropical fish, but I think the giant Carp have eaten them long ago.
Our first World Cup Regatta is in Poznan, Poland. Only Kenny Wallace and Jacob Clear will be competing from this squad in the K2 1000m. Teaming up with Western Australian sprinters Alana Nicholls, Steve Bird and Jessie Philips in their respective events.
Duisburg World Cup 2 in Germany, will have the weight of the full Australian Kayak Squad behind it. This event starts Friday 25th May. For the full list of events and results check out http://www.kanuduisburg.de/cms25/
The boys are ready and have been paying close attention to the big players at Poznan, mentally preparing themselves for what lies ahead.
Two World Cup Regattas. Duisburg and Moscow. Training camp in Hungary. Then “let the Games begin” in London!
Bring on the Olympic fever!
Tate Smith, Dave Smith, Murray Stewart and Jacob Clear, K4 action.
